1st Birthday Party – Superhero theme!

My little cuties turned one officially on July 26th and we celebrated their birthday with a super hero themed birthday party on August 2nd! I stressed about their 1st birthday, but in the end everything went perfectly. We did not pay anything to rent the space thanks to my gracious aunt and kept the menu simple. We had about 60-70 guests total. We were originally going to do something small but so many people wanted to celebrate our boys with us, so we decided to go for it. This is what we did…

Food: Pizza, veggie tray, pretzel tray with dips, and a variety of chips.

Drinks: Water, juice, soda.

Desserts: Captain America shield made out of blueberries, strawberries, and marshmallows; cutout sugar cookies, Thor’s hammer made out of pretzel rods and marshmallows, green “kryptonite” jello, and lots and lots of candy.

Cake: We were recommended a woman who made cakes for a fraction of the price that bakeries wanted to charge us. She did an amazing job! Check out her facebook page here. She makes EVERYTHING from scratch. It tasted sooo good and all of our guests raved about the look and taste.

Decor: Pinterest was a huge source of inspiration along with Catch my Party. I purchased decor items and made some on my own. My resources were Oriental Trading, Ebay, Amazon, Hobby Lobby, and Wal-mart.

Here are pics from the party!

Cake table with two smash cakes. We decorated the table with pictures of the boys’ journey and throughout the year.

We used cardboard boxes, black wrapping paper, and yellow cardstock to make some buildings.

The birthday cake! We were so happy with how they turned out! The baker used our invitation as inspiration to create the cake.

The space we used was a cafe, we covered the pictures of coffee with enlarged pics of our boys.

Dessert table. It was really cost effective, we purchased sugar cookie mix, fruit, two jello mixes, three bags of marshmallows, and pretzel rods. We put everything together the night before the party.

The buildings and signs helped us create a spot for pictures!

The birthday boys making their grand entrance! We purchased their shirts from Etsy. Shoes and hats were from Children’s Place (which we got on a great sale..hooray!) Shirts didn’t come with capes so we used velcro to stick it to the shirt and added the capes from other shirts the boys owned.

In lieu of a candy bar, we set up the candy in advance in small popcorn boxes, which I purchased from Amazon.

Micah and Josiah rolling deep with their crew of baby friends and cousins!

Josiah hanging out with his cousins!

Each boy had a smash cake. We ended up removing the capes so the cake would be safe for the babies to eat.

Josiah dug right in and ate. A son after his father’s own heart.

Pinata time! Not sure who had more fun with this part, my husband or the kids lol.

Posing with our friends! We asked guests to wear their favorite superhero t-shirts.

We ended the party with lots of smiles and laughter!

In the end, I don’t think I would have changed anything. This was something I really wanted to be awesome because the way I see it, this may very well be the only 1st birthday I will ever celebrate. These two just might be it for us…so I will go big or go home! I used coupons, free printables, and tried to get everything at a good deal. My plan is also to sell some of the things we used as well or donate them to my friend’s church if they need any of the items (they have a super hero themed event every fall). Still can’t believe my babies are one. We had such a great day celebrating!

oh wowzas! You did a great job! I started to panic the other night when I realized our little foster child will turn four on November 1st. I looked at Daniel with huge eyes and said…”do you know how to plan a child’s birthday party?!?!” Wanna come help me? hehe
